First is the hexagram that the New Moon is happening in.

54: THE MARRYING MAIDEN

ABOVE AND BELOW:

Thunder above, the lake below.
Amidst all the fun there will be dangerous warnings.
Excitement above and pleasure below.
Enjoyment that will have shocking consequences.

THE IMAGE:
Thunder on the lake.
It is dangerous to be on the water.
Excess brings danger and misfortune.
The arousal of joy has great consequences.
The force of happiness cannot be stopped.
It is important to strive for appropriateness.

THE JUDGEMENT:
Movement without, pleasure within.
Impulsive desire is rarely worthy.
The more one wants, the more one does.
If one does not question what one wants
One will attract what is intolerable.
Attractions comes first, repulsion will follow.
The end does not justify the means.
This is a difficult lesson.
Inconsiderate and selfish movement will have shocking consequences.
One who behaves in this manner will be a difficult companion.
Where is the patience? Where is the restraint? Where is the tolerance?
The more one forces issues, the less contentment one will have.
If one lives by the sword, one is likely to die by the sword.

FAMILY RELATIONSHIP:
The third daughter to the first son
If the third daughter gets in trouble,
The first son will get her out of it.
She acts to have fun.
He will react quickly.
She likes excitement.
He sees danger in her behaviour.
She does what she wants.
He sees what is appropriate and what is not.
He will be undermined by her actions
And repulsed by her desires.

ZODIAC CONSIDERATIONS (Pentans):
Carried away by a sense of self importance,
One takes the lead without listening.
One looks for helpers,
But good help is hard to find.
Criticism and impatience will make matters worse.
One would be wiser to keep busy
And improve oneself!

This is one example of where thoughts, or at least heart guided thoughts can help to control outward impulses. If you are pushing forwards, who is being pushed backwards. At what expense will your advances come? This is a matter for heart-felt discrimination as to what is right and what is wrong. True discrimination takes much time and grace to develop. If you force it, you will diminish it!
In this hexagram lies a warning about going too fast or too strongly towards what one wants without consideration of others. There is a big difference between acting out of personal desire, and initiatives evolving out of true joy.
There is a meditation in Tai Chi called the smiling face meditation in which one smiles at each internal organ and sends it joy and positive affirmations. This has the remarkable effect of removing fear, doubt and darkness. However it does require a letting go of outward desires and forces at least for a time.
Acting on one’s own desires often leads to rejection or repulsion and a growing sense of not liking oneself. Here the challenge is to smile inwardly and let the joy radiant out. If one is stirred to action, let it be action that helps others and improves their circumstances. Try to qualify the quality of your choices and subsequence initiatives.
What is happiness or contentment without moral fibre? What you put out, will sooner or later come back, so why not put out a smile, an unconditional smile!

The New Moon in Aries will be ruled by Mars, the planet of courage and initiative. Unfortunately, Mar will be afflicted by a square to Mercury and Venus. This stress pattern will increase impatience and irritability. It also implies a corruption of what is beautiful and pleasant by too much force. This tends to create a rowdy sense of discontent, which if acted upon will increase difficulties and diminish beauty. Contentment will not come by force. There is a challenge here on a personal spiritual level. Don’t complain! Fix your own character. The question is not what someone is doing to you, or how they are interfering with you but rather how come you are attracting disturbances to the peace and quality of life.
A Shakespeare quote refers well to this, “The fault dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves that we are underlings.”
It will take effort and some self sacrificing to improve the spiritual quality or your life and even to improve your personal circumstances. It is important to not make your advances at the inconvenience or expense of someone else.
It truly does become difficult to share with others during such times, and yet it is so essential for us to do so. Impulse to make improvement and to help the lot of others will be a noble and loving impulse that is trust worthy and healing. Help, don’t hurt.

It will probably be a good idea to carry your prayers and meditations into action this New Moon.
One of the wonderful things about chanting God’s name is that it can be done while you are engaged in activity. You can chant while you walk or do dishes. May I suggest that you go out for a chanting walk. You can chant silently to yourself, or hum it or sing it out loud. Just try to put the Name of God into action! Not preaching, but intertwined with some physical action that you do.
In the morning when you wake up, chant out loud during your exercise routine. Multi-task your sadhana. It won’t be long before you are smiling about it.
This spiritual smile is healing and it spreads magnificently to all who see it.

Keep it simple! Chant and smile! Chant and smile!

Chanting on the New Moon gives extra power to the chant, as it is the seed moment of the month when the past (Moon-Krishna) and the future (Sun-Rama) embrace each other. Bring your sensitivity to God into the moment. Really, into every moment! Chanting on the New Moon will purify your psyche and give reinforcement to your inner feelings and faith. There is nothing to lose! This is a win, win, win situation. Enjoy it!

Chant while you walk.
